2009 Films Being Considered

Below are a selection of films that are currently being considered for the 2008 Fernie Mountain Film Festival.



Oil + Water

The boys are making their way south, tackling the longest 100% petroleum-free road trip in the world: The Pan-American Highway. The majority of their fuel comes from recycled restaurant fryer grease. The rest comes from grassroots b100 Biodiesel facilities, animal waste oils and homemade vegetable oil from the on board vegetable oil seed press. They have already traveled over 45,000 kilometers without a single drop of gas or diesel.


A Moment of Clarity...

To understand where you live, is to understand if you belong. In a New Zealand Southern Beech Forest, step inside the mind and madness of one of the top introduced backcountry killers; the rat. This fresh perspective redefines the forest’s beauty, questioning who belongs where as ecology dictates the sustainability. A short film/documentary by Sarah Cowhey (Ireland) & Louise Davidson (New Zealand), in association with Otago University and Natural History New Zealand. June 2007, Duration 24 minutes.


The Story of Stuff

The Story of Stuff will take you on a provocative tour of our consumer-driven culture — from resource extraction to iPod incineration — exposing the real costs of our use-it and lose-it approach to stuff.


Aeon

Aeon is an zen influenced experimental time lapse film documenting a day in the life and death of Wellington City, New Zealand. The film is composed of over 50 hours of video, compressed into 13 minutes. Aeon was isnspired from such films as Koyaanasquatsi, Baraka & Man With a Movie Camera. Aeon has won the following awards: Best Short Documentary at the DocNZ Festival 2005 & Best Student Film at the American Conservation Film Festival, West Virginia, in 2007


Beyond the Horizon

Colin Angus and his wife-to-be, Julie Wafaei, circle the world in a 43,000 km journey by rowboat, bicycle, foot and ski, completing what Outside Magazine and many others have called "one of the last great expeditions" - the first human powered circumnavigation.



Midnight Sun

Midnight Sun - Runtime 23 mins. Midnight Sun is a non verbal experimental film documenting a voyage to Antarctica aboard the massively powerful Russian Icebreaker, Kapitan Khlebnikov. I made this film while working as a wine steward on this ship in the summer of 2004. It features New Zealand's Sub Antarctic Islands and wildlife, the Antarctic Ross Sea and the monster iceberg B15. Garbage Dreams

There is a battle over trash in the city of Cairo. The Egyptian government has recently awarded contracts to foreign multi-national companies to collect Cairo’s garbage. 60,000 Zaballeen — Cairo’s indigenous garbage collectors whose livelihood depends on collecting and recycling garbage — will be displaced. Completely dependent on trash for survival, they are fighting for their lives.

You’ve probably heard the name Julian Carr mentioned in the freeski press over the last few ski seasons. He’s been gettin’ a lot of mention for his huge cliff drops. Not unlike Jamie Pierre’s skiing, these stunts come with widespread criticism. Calculated or crazy?



Kids Who Rip

Kids who Rip got its start 9 years ago, when Action Sports Video Director Rod Parmenter filmed pro surfer TJ Barron when he was just 10 years old. Rod was so inspired by TJ that he decided to develop a show featuring the young stars of action sports. Rod also filmed other future pros Shaun White and Shane Bonifay.



Ice Mines - Will Gadd

Where will ice climbers go if climate change destroys the world’s classic ice routes? Canadian Will Gadd and Swede Andreas Spak explored one possible answer in Sweden, where they rappelled deep into abandoned iron mines to check out underground ice routes.



Cheat Neutral

Cheatneutral is about offsetting infidelity. We're the only people doing it, and Cheatneutral is a joke.

Carbon offsetting is about paying for the right to carry on emitting carbon. The Carbon offset industry sold £60 million of offsets last year, and is rapidly growing. Carbon offsetting is also a joke.



Bicycling as Truth

A film based on a poem, narrated by and featuring Robin Mathews:
It has nothing to do with Zen and the theology of making motors go. It’s more basic, riding a bicycle from the East End into the heart of the Downtown when there’s nowhere else a person can go to get something.

Bernice Notenboom Slideshow

Adventurer, explorer, writer, radio correspondent and filmmaker, Bernice Notenboom used to work 60 hours a week for one of the world's leading software corporations. In 1995, she abandoned the stress of her corporate career to create Moki Treks ( mokitreks.com ), a travel company that aims to raise awareness of indigenous cultures.



Fernie Boys

Born & raised in Fernie, exceptionally talented local freeride mountain biker / filmaker Nic Genovese started making films a couple of years ago with his little digital camera. Fernie Boys, showcases the local youth talent pool throughout the summer of 2006, riding around Fernie, Cranbrook, Creston, Kimberly, and Calgary.

Rory Hinds Build them and race them, the annual Fernie Soap Box Derby is an opportunity for kids to construct their own vehicle, then test it in a head to head race.



Howser in Peril

Right now the BC Government is poised to transfer ownership rights to over 500 wild and scenic parts of BC. This could mean the building of hundreds of independent power plants in watersheds throughout the province, without any adequate review of the environmental or community impacts.



Soul Flyers 2
